Reasons for Austin Breast Augmentation

There are numerous reasons why a woman might choose breast augmentation for herself, from correcting asymmetrical breasts to feeling more confident in her clothing. No matter what your motivation might be for wanting this procedure, our plastic surgeons know the result can go far beyond the physical. Women may enjoy increased self-confidence, and some studies even suggest a higher quality of life overall for women who are happy with the results of their procedure. Our physicians often meet women who choose breast augmentation surgery to restore volume lost due to aging, pregnancy, weight loss or genetics for a proportionate look.

How Do Silicone Implants Compare to Saline Implants?

The type of implant that you receive can influence quite a bit about your surgery and your life. Each type of implant has a distinct feel. Saline is known to have a firmer feel, while silicone breast implants are designed to feel softer, more like natural breast tissue.

The appearance of your breasts is also affected by the type of implant that you choose. Saline implants tend to look firmer and fuller at both the upper and lower poles of the breast. Silicone breast implants, on the other hand, are more similar to the natural curvature of the breasts. With silicone breast implants, your augmented breasts may be slightly sloped at the upper pole, with organic-looking fullness at the bottom pole.

Your incision type will be dictated by the type of implant you choose. Because silicone breast implants are pre-filled, they require longer incisions for safe insertion without excess stretching of the skin. Saline breast implants may be inserted through shorter incisions because they are not filled until they are in place.

Both types of breast implants may need to be replaced at some point. Replacement may be necessary if a rupture occurs, which may be noticeable if you have saline implants. In that situation, the saline leaks from the implant shell and gets safely absorbed by the body. The affected breast will look noticeably deflated. A rupture in a silicone implant may not be noticed at all, and, depending on the structure of the implant, cohesive or not, the silicone gel may migrate into surrounding tissue, potentially causing complications. It is important to receive routine breast screenings that can monitor the structural integrity of silicone breast implants and prevent unidentified leakage.

How Do I Prepare for Breast Augmentation Surgery?

The preparation that occurs before your breast augmentation procedure can do a lot to improve your overall experience. We'll provide you with some instructions that will ensure your surgery is done safely and effectively. The following are some tips to come to your surgery feeling ready:
  • Arrange sufficient time off work.
  • Arrange to have someone drop you off and pick you up at the surgery center.
  • Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet that includes lean protein and an abundance of vegetables.
  • Gather items that you will need for your recovery, including your prescriptions and post-surgical supplies.
  • Gather creature comforts that will keep you soothed and entertained while you recover at home.
  • Follow your pre-op instructions related to medications and supplements (what to take and what to avoid).
  • Contact our office if questions arise!

When Can I Return to Work After Breast Augmentation?

Your return to work after your breast augmentation procedure may depend on a few different factors. One is the extent of your surgery. If you combine your breast augmentation with another procedure, like a breast lift, you may need a few extra days to recover before resuming light activities. Another factor is the type of work you do. You might expect to be back to a desk job within a few days of a standard breast augmentation. To be fully capable of performing more demanding work, such as that which requires pushing, pulling, or lifting, you may need a week or two of rest and recovery. If you have questions about how much time your doctor anticipates you'll need before returning to work, bring this up during our consultation or pre-operative visit! We're happy to help you plan accordingly.

Can You Still Breastfeed After Breast Augmentation?

There is no disruption to the milk ducts or mammary glands during the breast augmentation procedure. Therefore, the vast majority of women who have this surgery retain their ability to breastfeed at a later time. There is a slight chance that your milk supply may be affected due to the severing of nerves during surgery. This can depend on the type of incision your doctor uses. Our surgeons are extraordinarily trained and use the utmost care in performing breast procedures in a way that preserves nerve function. Talk with your doctor about your desire to breastfeed in the future. They can discuss how they will operate to protect this ability.

What Is the Best Age to Get Breast Augmentation?

Once you've reached the appropriate age to receive breast implants (18 for saline, 22 for silicone), there is no perfect age at which breast augmentation is ideal. We treat women in their twenties and women in their sixties and beyond. Provided that you are in good general health, can safely undergo surgery, and have realistic expectations, you may be an excellent candidate for this breast surgery.

Breast Augmentation For Busy Lifestyles: Weekend Breast Surgery

As a working mother, Dr. Fisher understand the challenges in scheduling time to do something just for yourself. She and the Austin Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery team have designed the Weekend Breast Augmentation to help busy women get the enhancement they want without an extended recovery period afterward.

Our Weekend Breast Augmentation employs modern technologies during surgery that result in minimal discomfort and faster recovery. Many of our patients book their operations on a Thursday or Friday and can return to work the following Monday. This approach to breast surgery is an excellent choice for women who have work or family responsibilities that prohibit them from taking two or more weeks to heal after their procedure. Even if you schedule your breast augmentation surgery earlier on in the week, you will still be able to benefit from the shorter and more comfortable recovery period that our proprietary techniques provide.

Restore Your Pre-Baby Shape With Breast Implants

While having children is a beautiful, life-changing experience, it also produces many dramatic changes to the body. Some of these changes can be naturally reversed once the baby is born while others will linger indefinitely. Sagging, as well as a deflated shape of the breasts, can affect a woman's appearance and self-esteem. Our surgeons will work with you to reverse the changes and restore your youthful, pre-baby body as closely as possible.

Goals of Aesthetic Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is primarily about addressing size, but that is not the only goal to be achieved during this surgery. At Austin Plastic & Reconstructive Survery, we recognize that a patient's desire is often not just to add volume but to enhance the body proportions with a natural look. Our commitment is to not only creating fuller breasts but breasts that look beautiful—an approach she refers to as aesthetic breast augmentation.

The aim is to produce a result that is naturally attractive while adding curves according to the patient's specifications. That understanding, coupled with our plastic surgeons' years of extensive experience working with a range of modern implants on a variety of body types, provides the foundation for safe, personalized, and long-lasting results.

Breast Augmentation Procedure

The breast augmentation consists of a series of steps that work together to produce the beautiful outcome you want:

Your Consultation

Every breast augmentation starts with a thorough consultation. We will use this time to get to know you, your body and your goals. This appointment is the ideal time to ask any questions you may have about breast augmentation. Together, you and your plastic surgeon will develop a safe plan to deliver your desired results. The consultation also involves a physical examination, at which time we will take breast measurements and assess your current breast tissue. You will then meet with our cosmetic patient care coordinator to receive your complimentary quote at the conclusion of your consultation.

Austin Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery is run entirely by women, ensuring all our breast patients feel comfortable discussing their concerns and undergoing the entire surgical process. We feature a warm, reassuring environment that puts our patients at ease. If you are unsure as you begin the process, our team will guide you every step of the way.

Breast Implant Selection

Our plastic surgeons work directly with you to select the best breast implant type to obtain your desired results. Most of our patients choose silicone breast implants, which are filled with a gel that more closely mimics natural breast tissue than a saline-filled implant. These FDA-approved implants are medically safe and have a more natural look and feel, which is why we often recommend them. Choosing the right breast implant is a very personal decision. Your surgeon will discuss in detail the benefits and drawbacks of silicone versus saline implants during your initial consultation.

The Austin Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery team draws on deep experience with reconstructive breast surgery to help guide you to the correct implant for your breast augmentation goals, your figure and your lifestyle.

Other Augmentation Choices

In addition to choosing the implant type, you will have a choice of size, shape and profile. A range of sizes allows us to create a proportionate look for your body. Implants also come in both round and teardrop shapes. We will listen to you and help you choose the best look for you based on the results you hope to achieve. An important factor is the cosmetic breast profile that you hope to achieve, such as how far the breast will project from the chest wall. Selecting a profile is a decision that should be based on your specific body contour and desired outcome to ensure the most natural results possible.

What To Expect On The Day Of Your Breast Augmentation Surgery

A board-certified anesthesiologist will administer the general anesthesia needed for breast augmentation surgery that will ensure you are comfortably asleep throughout your procedure. Most patients are candidates for a hidden-scar technique in which a small incision is placed in the crease beneath your breast (also called the inframammary fold) where the thin scar will be easily hidden by the natural fold of your breast or a bra. This incision placement minimizes the chance of capsular contracture, a painful complication caused by constricted scar tissue. It also lessens the likelihood of loss of nipple sensitivity after surgery.

Once the incision is made, the chosen implant is inserted into a dual-plane position with the tip of the implant underneath your pectoralis muscle and the lower portion of the implant under your breast gland. This placement offers a natural slope to the upper breast and limits rippling and visibility of the implant edges within the breast tissue, which is why our surgeons prefer this technique for nearly all of our breast augmentation surgeries. They also can inject a local anesthetic around the surgery site for your comfort, which helps to block pain for five to seven days after your surgery.

Your breast augmentation will take approximately two hours, and you will be able to go home the same day. However, since you will have general anesthesia for your surgery, you will need to have someone drive you home and preferably remain with you for the first 24 to 48 hours as you begin the recovery process.

What To Expect During Recovery After Breast Augmentation

Following your surgery, you can expect to spend one to two hours recovery on-site, after which you will return home to rest and recuperate surrounded by your familiar comforts. We will provide you with a front-closing surgical bra, which you will be advised to wear for about two weeks. This garment helps to promote faster recovery and minimize post-operative scarring and inflammation.

When Can I Return To Normal Activity After Breast Augmentation?

Most patients return to work within three days after breast augmentation and should be experiencing little or no pain by that time. Our surgeons recommend waiting two weeks to resume light exercise and six weeks for weight-lifting or high-impact aerobic exercise such as running.

Pain Management for Shorter Recovery Times

For the Weekend Breast Augmentation procedure, Austin Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery uses EXPAREL®, an opioid-free local anesthetic that blocks pain for up to four days after surgery. Your surgeon will inject EXPAREL® around your surgical sites to block each nerve to the chest, resulting in a significant decrease in pain while you are in the most acute phase of healing. Less pain helps you to rest more comfortably, which can then accelerate the healing process.

The combination of EXPAREL® and gentler surgical techniques also results in a dramatic reduction in need for narcotic medication after surgery. Most of our patients who undergo the Weekend Breast Augmentation don’t need any pain medication stronger than Tylenol and an anti-inflammatory such as Aleve after surgery. Because narcotic pain medication is frequently accompanied by side effects like nausea, constipation and dizziness, your recovery period tends to be more comfortable and pleasant without it.

Faster Mobility = Faster Recovery

By reducing pain and avoiding the side effects of narcotic pain medication after your operation, you can rest more comfortably to accelerate the healing process. Most of our Weekend Breast Augmentation patients are also able to resume a reasonable range of motion in their arms as early as the evening after surgery. Although strenuous exercise still needs to be avoided for four weeks, early movement of the arms after your procedure will allow you to get back to your regular activities faster.

Long-Lasting Results with Breast Implants

It will take some time for swelling and bruising to subside before you will get an accurate idea of what your final result will look like. At first, your breast implants will likely seem a bit high to you, and your breasts might feel firmer than you like. As the swelling goes down, your chest muscles and breast shape will relax and begin to look more natural. After six weeks, the implants settle, resulting in breasts that have a shapely new look. Your results will last for many years. In fact, you do not have to do anything with your implants as long as you don't have any problems arise. Some women do choose to replace their implants in time if they decide to change the size or shape as well.

Can Breast Augmentation Be Combined With Other Procedures?

Breast augmentation is not the only option for enhancing the appearance of the breasts. Women who want to correct breast sagging or change the direction their breasts point may consider a breast lift, which can be performed as a solo procedure or in combination with augmentation. If you tend to be happier with the way your breasts look in a bra, then a breast lift may be a good option for you. This procedure restores the breasts to a more youthful position on the chest wall while removing loose skin that exacerbates the sagging effect.

Mommy Makeover Surgery

Breast augmentation changes a woman's silhouette and can be a component in a larger group of procedures known as a "Mommy Makeover." Women that have been through pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding may be interested in pairing breast enhancement with an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck, which is intended to flatten and tone a bulging, sagging belly. You may also consider liposuction as a single procedure or in conjunction with a Mommy Makeover to remove stubborn deposits of fat from various areas of the body that tend to linger after pregnancy.
