Chemical Peels

Remove Signs of Aging & Damage in Austin, TX

Since the outermost layers of skin are where many fine lines, signs of sun damage, and numerous other cosmetic problems are seen, removing these layers is a simple and effective way to rejuvenate the entire face. A chemical peel from the medspa at Austin Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery is a nonsurgical method that exfoliates away dead skin cells to reveal younger, clearer skin and stimulates the natural healing processes that continue to revitalize the area long after the treatment is done.

Chemical Peels

A range of chemical peels is available—superficial, medium, and deep—but all of them work in generally the same way: A carefully prepared solution is applied to the skin, then removed after an appropriate amount of time has passed—which depends on the peel being used. These will cause the outermost layer of skin to exfoliate and be replaced with new epidermis. In the hours and days after a session, the treated skin will begin to flake and peel to reveal fresher, smoother, brighter skin. This skin will appear red and feel tender at first, as well as be particularly sensitive to sunlight, so precautions should be taken to avoid exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Deeper peels stimulate a greater effect, and in some cases can also smooth away fine lines by tightening skin due to increased collagen production in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue.

Here are some of the peels available at our medspa:

Jessner Chemical Peel
$150

The Jessner Chemical Peel uses a full-strength blend of lactic acid, salicylic acid, and resorcinol that breaks up the bonds that hold dead skin cells together to chemically exfoliate the skin for a softer feel and brighter appearance. After two days of dryness, a light flaking of the skin begins and lasts for about three days, revealing fresh skin. This treatment is ideal for darker skin types, oily and acne-prone skin, and for anyone looking for an advanced exfoliation treatment with little down time.

$150
TCA Chemical Peel
$300

In a TCA Chemical peel, trichloracetic acid is used for a deeper level of exfoliation to treat stubborn aging concerns for dramatic results. After two to three days of dry, tight skin, sheet peeling occurs for three to six days. The peeling process reveals smoother, brighter, and more even-toned skin, and diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This treatment is ideal for those who want to address sun damage, hyperpigmentation, or acne scars.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Options

Similar results are available from laser skin resurfacing treatments. A "laser peel" is an erbium laser resurfacing treatment that painlessly removes the outermost 20 to 100 microns of epidermis. Deeper treatments are available to reduce visible brown spots, age spots and enlarged capillaries. Another laser treatment, called Haloâ„¢, creates a dramatic improvement with a combination of brightening and skin tightening to erase sun damage. This uses a fractional erbium laser to deeply treat the skin with minimal downtime. A consultation with the medspa team can help patients determine which option is best for them.

Questions About Chemical Peels:

Chemical peels are customized to some extent. These treatments are performed to resurface the skin using precise chemical agents such as lactic acid, salicylic acid, and resorcinol. When applied to the skin, these chemical agents break down the dead and damaged cells in the uppermost layers of tissue. As a result, these cells slough off in an expedited manner. The accelerated speed of cellular turnover can provide significant benefits. Depending on the depth of the peel or the frequency of a series of peels, treatment can improve overall skin tone, diminish rough patches, reduce the appearance of lines, scarring, and sun damage, and also promote new collagen production.

The chemical peel experience can vary depending on the type of peel that is selected. Generally, the process involves gently cleansing the skin and removing oils, followed by the application of the selected chemical agent. This solution is left on the skin for just a few minutes, sometimes as few as 3 minutes, to achieve its objective of loosening old skin cells. During the session, patients can expect to feel temporary stinging. This may feel slightly itchy. Becuase the sensations are so transient, patients rarely express significant discomfort.

The effects of a chemical peel vary depending on the strength and type of peel you select. Peels frequency cause side effects like temporary redness and a feeling of tightness in the skin. Visible peeling may or may not occur. If it does, it may last for 3 to 5 days. Patients should use a gentle cleanser to wash their skin as directed. Moisturizers and the use of sunscreen are also important aspects of aftercare. When the skin is actively flaking or peeling, it is best to avoid all unnecessary sun exposure. If you go out, wear a broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. When you consult with one of our experienced providers about a chemical peel, they will discuss the particulars of your treatment, including what to expect and how to care for your skin through the regeneration process.

There are a few things to avoid before getting a chemical peel. General recommendations include:

  • Do not wax the treatment area the week before treatment.
  • Avoid the use of retinol products, alpha and beta hydroxy acids, and benzoyl peroxide for two to three days before treatment. This includes Retin-A.
  • Practice good skincare and sun protection to avoid unnecessary inflammation from a chemical peel.

Most adults are great candidates for our Jessner or TCA chemical peel treatment. That said, some people may be more prone to excessive irritation from chemical solutions. Talk with your provider to determine if any of the following may affect your treatment experience:

  • You have an active cold sore, wart, or herpes simplex outbreak in the treatment area.
  • Your skin is extraordinarily sensitive.
  • Do not get a chemical peel if you are sunburned.
  • You have used Accutane in the last 12 months.
  • You have received radiation or chemotherapy.
  • You are allergic to aspirin.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have an autoimmune condition like lupus or psoriasis.
  • You have vitiligo.

Our staff has extensive training and experience in the performance of chemical peels and other services. If you have a condition that may be contraindicated to a chemical peel, your provider may find a suitable alternative that can acheive similar outcomes.
