What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a painless, quick, non-invasive exfoliating treatment that resembles a traditional straight-edge razor shave that men receive at the barbershop. Our experienced skin care specialist, Sandy Lanier, PA-C, uses a sterile scalpel to gently remove the stratum corneum, or top layer of skin, from the face, revealing the healthier, softer skin below the dead cells. Dermaplaning also thoroughly removes vellus hair (also known as peach fuzz), making the face feel incredibly smooth and looking rejuvenated.

What are the Benefits of Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is available to patients of virtually all skin types. It is a great choice to refresh your complexion because it:

  • Is painless
  • Has little or no downtime
  • Can be performed frequently
  • Removes the fine hair that covers the face
  • Removes dead skin cells
  • Stimulates cell turnover
  • Smooths the skin so that makeup goes on evenly
  • Helps increase absorption of your skincare products, allowing them to be more effective
  • Provides a safe, deep exfoliation for pregnant women and patients with other underlying health conditions
  • Can be utilized before and after other skincare treatments to optimize their effectiveness

Am I a Good Candidate for Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a great option for a wide range of patients and skin types because it is non-invasive, doesn’t pierce the skin and doesn’t require the use of medications before, during or after the procedure. It is safe for pregnant women and patients with certain health conditions that make other skin procedures impossible. Dermaplaning may be right for you if you have dull skin, fine lines, dry patches or sun damage and you want to add some “glow” back to your complexion. However, it is not recommended for patients with:

  • Active acne
  • Cystic acne
  • Highly sensitive skin
  • Rosacea or patches of redness
  • Keratosis pilaris or tiny bumps and rough, dry patches
  • Excessive, dark, coarse, unwanted hair growth, also known as hirsutism

How is Dermaplaning Different from Microdermabrasion?

Dermaplaning and microdermabrasion are both skin exfoliating procedures that help with fine lines, dry patches and mild discoloration or scarring. However, the tools used to perform the exfoliation are different. Dermaplaning uses a sterile scalpel to remove the top layer of skin. Microdermabrasion, on the other hand, uses a motorized device with a specialized tip to exfoliate the skin, along with vacuum suction to remove the dead skin cells. Microdermabrasion creates tiny abrasions on the surface of the skin, whereas dermaplaning does not abrade the skin in any way. Because of the abrasive nature of microdermabrasion, the face may be red, irritated and peel for several days following treatment, requiring a brief recovery period. In contrast, dermaplaning has virtually zero downtime.

The Dermaplaning Procedure

Because of the non-invasive nature of dermaplaning, there is very little you need to do to prepare for your appointment, other than avoid sunburn. We will gently cleanse your face to make sure it is free of dirt and oil, then hold the skin taut in sections while gently pulling the sterile scalpel across the area. We will continue this process in small sections until your entire face has been dermaplaned. Dermaplaning alone takes approximately 45 minutes. If you have additional treatments scheduled for the same day as your dermaplaning procedure, please allow for more time in our office.

Virtually No Recovery Time or Downtime

Our patients love dermaplaning because they can return to all their usual activities immediately after the procedure. Some patients opt for a dermaplaning treatment right before major events, as they find makeup applies much more smoothly post-treatment, resulting in an enviable glow.

It is important to avoid the sun after dermaplaning and apply a good SPF product as your skin may be more sensitive to sun exposure. Furthermore, protecting your skin from the damaging rays of the sun will improve the overall health and appearance of your skin, and help the effects of your treatments last longer.

Dermaplaning can give you softer, smoother skin, but because of the non-invasive nature of the treatment, consistently scheduled sessions are necessary to achieve and maintain your desired results. While dermaplaning removes all facial hair, it does not stop hair growth. Routine dermaplaning appointments, scheduled once a month, can help you maintain a smooth complexion, free of facial fuzz.

Combining Procedures for Optimal Results

Dermaplaning removes the top layer of dead skin cells from the face, making it an excellent prep procedure or post-procedure follow up for other treatments, such as chemical peels, facials and rejuvenating lasers. With the dead skin out of the way, the skin is free of debris which allows these treatments to penetrate the skin more effectively, leading to better results. Dermaplaning is also effective a couple of weeks after a laser resurfacing treatment, as it helps to remove the treated tissues that have made their way to the surface of the skin. During your consultation, Sandy Lanier, PA-C, will discuss how dermaplaning can optimize other procedures or skincare products to provide you with the results you desire. There is never any pressure to add on services. We simply want you to know about all of the options available to you.

Choosing a Dermaplaning Specialist

While some non-medical spas may offer dermaplaning, a scalpel in untrained hands can lead to scarring or infection. Choosing an experienced dermaplaning specialist is the key to a safe, clean and effective procedure. At Austin Cosmetic Med Spa, you are in well-trained hands with our non-surgical skincare expert Sandy Lanier, PA-C, who will perform your dermaplaning procedure with precision and accuracy, giving your skin a refreshed and younger-looking appearance.
