Microneedling Therapy

Kick-Start Skin Revitalization in Austin, TX

If your skin isn’t looking as vibrant and radiant as it used to, it may just need a boost to restore its youthful glow. Skin rejuvenation is a broad category that encompasses a wide range of treatments, but one of the most popular and effective procedures today is microneedling. Also referred to as “collagen induction therapy,” microneedling works with your body’s natural processes to heal skin from within, creating natural revitalization of the dermal structure.

Our medspa team is proud to offer the first FDA-cleared device for scar treatment and skin rejuvenation, called SkinPen®. This device features minimally-invasive treatment sessions with a quick recovery time, as well as natural, long-lasting improvements in the complexion. Because SkinPen® works on a variety of skin concerns, many patients can benefit from this treatment.

Who Should Consider Microneedling?

Microneedling is safe for nearly all individuals, regardless of skin type and tone. While SkinPen® is cleared by the FDA for treatment of facial acne scars, it offers additional benefits, including:

  • Reduction in pigmentation irregularities
  • Elimination of some fine lines and wrinkles
  • Smoother, more even skin tone and texture
  • Smaller, less noticeable pores
  • Reversal of early signs of skin laxity
  • Improvement in the appearance of stretch marks

While microneedling is commonly performed on the face, it can also be performed on the chest, neck, back, hands, abdomen and legs. There are a few contraindications for microneedling, which include skin infection, keloid scarring, certain skin conditions and current use of immunosuppressant therapy. We will make a careful assessment of your skin concerns, medical history and current health status to determine whether microneedling is the right choice for you.

Stimulating Restoration

The natural healing processes in the skin are good for more than just repairing wounds. Once the process is initiated, the production of collagen and other beneficial elements can also improve the overall look and health of the skin, reducing the appearance of pores, fine lines and wrinkles. This collagen production is the science behind microneedling.

SkinPen® uses tiny needles to create many micro-channels in the skin of the treatment area. Each of these channels prompts the body’s healing response so the therapeutic process can begin. Since the channels are remarkably small, they quickly close, and the ongoing repair work continues underneath the skin’s surface. This internal process means you won’t have visible evidence of treatment after just a day or two, but the restoration will continue over many months to produce a noticeable enhancement in your complexion. SkinPen® is adjustable to accommodate a range of skin types and thicknesses, making microneedling a versatile treatment with long-lasting results.

Making the Right Choice in Microneedling

As the popularity of microneedling has grown, so has the variety of treatment options. From DIY devices you can use at home to professional spa treatments, there are plenty of places to undergo a microneedling procedure. However, not all of these methods are considered equal regarding safety or effectiveness. SkinPen® is the first device cleared by the FDA for the treatment of facial acne scarring, and has been shown to provide excellent results without significant discomfort or downtime. Our microneedling specialists, Sandy Lanier, PA-C, and Katie Bertling, RN, LE have extensive experience in all types of nonsurgical cosmetic treatments and the skill necessary to ensure you achieve an optimal outcome from your microneedling treatment.

How to Prepare for Your Procedure

To ensure the best possible experience, Sandy may recommend a few steps to help you prepare for your procedure. Those might include:

  • Discontinuing products containing retinol or vitamin A for a few days before your treatment
  • Using a pre-treatment skin care regimen
  • Wearing sunscreen daily to avoid sun damage right before treatment
  • Increasing your consumption of water and antioxidant-rich fruits to help speed up the recovery process
  • Avoiding use of anti-inflammatory medications in the days before your treatment

If there are other steps you should take, your medspa provider will discuss them with you at your initial consultation. The closer you adhere to these instructions, the better your outcome will likely be.

Your Treatment Experience

Our medspa team performs microneedling procedures in a safe and precise manner with the use of a sterile needle head. A topical anesthetic is applied 30 minutes before the microneedling treatment begins to ensure your comfort. Once the numbing cream has taken effect, the procedure will be completed within 30-60 minutes, depending on the number and size of treatment areas. Your provider will glide the device, which resembles a large pen, across the surface of your skin as it delivers the needles into the dermal layers at the precise depth needed to achieve your desired results. You will be able to leave our office immediately following your procedure.

Microneedling with PRP

Microneedling can be performed as a stand-alone procedure or in combination with another treatment known as platelet-rich plasma, or PRP. Platelets are a component in your blood that are rich in restorative properties like growth factors. When they are applied to the skin during a microneedling treatment, they can accelerate healing and amplify the rejuvenation effect. PRP is applied prior to the microneedling process so that the needles can deliver the growth factors deep into the dermal structure where they can have the most significant effect. Popular media has dubbed this procedure a “vampire facial,” although there is nothing sinister about it. Use of your own blood cells to stimulate the restorative process is a safe and effective way to reverse damage and signs of aging on the skin.

#NoFilter Microneedling

Our office is among the first in Austin to offer an enhanced microneedling option designed to give you a healthy, natural glow so you can live life filter-free. Traditional microneedling creates tiny micro-channels in the skin that prompt the body’s natural healing response. With #NoFilter Microneedling, 20 units of BOTOX® Cosmetic and half a syringe of dermal filler JUVÉDERM® Volbella in addition to Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is spread across the skin, allowing absorption into the dermal structure via the micro-channels. Results can include visible reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, a smoother skin tone and texture, reversal of early signs of skin laxity, and smaller pore size.

Caring for Your Skin After Microneedling

While you will be able to head home right after your treatment, you should expect to see some swelling and redness for the first day. It will likely be comparable to a sunburn, but since you won’t be able to apply makeup right away to cover it up, you might be more comfortable relaxing at home after your treatment. We will send you home with products specifically designed for use after a SkinPen® treatment, which help promote healing.

Bruising can also occur in the treatment area but is typically mild and short-lived. Discomfort is rarely enough to keep you from any activities you would like to do, although we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise or heavy sweating for the first few days since they can irritate the skin. By the second day, you will be able to cover up residual redness with makeup, and by the third day, your side effects should be nearly gone. Sun protection will be imperative in the weeks following your treatment to ensure no further damage occurs while your skin heals.

Refresh, Rejuvenate, Reverse Time

While you are likely to see improvement after your very first microneedling session, it is possible you will need a series of treatments to achieve an optimal outcome. In most cases, a series of three appointments, spaced four to six weeks apart, will provide full skin rejuvenation. Once those results are achieved (which may take up to three months after the last treatment) an occasional touch-up procedure will preserve them indefinitely.

Microneedling is an excellent choice for refreshing the complexion, reversing signs of aging and restoring your healthy glow.
