HALO, BroadBand Light, & Laser Peels in Austin

The surface of the skin is where many signs of aging and sun damage appear. Laser treatments for sun spots and fractional resurfacing of the skin can give you a healthy, more youthful look. There are several intense pulsed light (IPL) and laser resurfacing treatments available from the medspa at Austin Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. Our experienced aesthetic medical providers will work with each patient individually to determine the ideal treatment based on skin type, conditions to be addressed, and the desired end result.

HALO Laser Treatment

The HALO laser is the world’s first hybrid fractional laser system. Easy to use with precise and safe settings, the HALO laser offers effective treatment for multiple skin conditions, including all of the following:

  • Sun damage
  • Dyschromia (melanin-based pigmentation disorder)
  • Signs of aging
  • Enlarged pores
  • Appearance of fine lines
  • Textural changes in the skin
  • Scars
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Rosacea (redness)

HALO laser treatment combines ablative and non-ablative wavelengths. Because it is a fractionated laser, it allows the skin to heal quickly, maximizing clinical results and minimizing downtime. Ablative fractional resurfacing uses a deep laser in a dot matrix-like pattern to treat tissue with less thermal injury, allowing it to address textural issues, scarring, and pores without requiring a lengthy recovery period. The non-ablative fractional resurfacing treatment causes pinpoint spots of tissue coagulation, allowing it to treat deeper sun damage and dermal pigment changes, as well as stimulate collagen development to tighten the skin.

In the past, it would take five to six treatments with lasers to achieve the same results that HALO can now produce in one to two treatments. HALO can be used on most skin types and to erase sun damage in different areas of the body, including the face, neck, chest, arms, and legs.

Laser Peel Treatment

Known for its safety profile and effectiveness, the Contour TRL laser peel is ideal for addressing lines, pigmentation irregularities, and other signs of sun and environmental damage. The device is remarkably precise, allowing the operator to control energy delivery for ideal, customized results. This laser peel treatment is ideal for treating the following skin issues:

  • Severe wrinkles and enlarged pores
  • Scarring
  • Sun damage
  • Actinic keratoses
  • Poor skin texture and tone

Because of the precision possible with Contour TRL, it can be used around the mouth and even the eyes—a benefit not offered by other lasers. A single deep laser peel of about 15 to 50 minutes is usually enough to generate more transformative results. After a few days of healing, during which your skin will look and feel like it has been sunburned, the outermost layer of skin will re-grow for a smoother look. Laser peels also trigger fresh collagen production, which will continue for months and further improve results.

Can I combine different laser skin resurfacing treatments?

Patients don’t typically seek to combine different laser resurfacing treatments, as the laser and BroadBand Light energy address the same areas of the facial skin. However, our laser skin resurfacing treatments can be combined with other treatments and even surgical procedures, such as liposuction. If you’re interested in combining another treatment with a laser skin resurfacing treatment, that’s something you and your provider can discuss during your consultation.

How do I prepare for laser skin resurfacing treatment?

Before your laser skin resurfacing treatment, you should do the following:

  • Avoid tanning or heavy sun exposure for one month before your session.
  • Don’t have any medium chemical peels or dermabrasion for one month before your session.
  • Don’t use medications that cause photosensitivity, such as doxycycline or minocycline, for at least 72 hours before your session.
  • If you have a history of herpes or shingles in the treatment area, be sure to let us know beforehand.

What is the recovery like after laser skin resurfacing?

After your laser skin resurfacing treatment, you may experience mild soreness and swelling, but these symptoms should subside fairly quickly on their own. Additionally, your skin will have lost some of its natural sun protection, which means that you’ll need to wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 for several months. For the first few days after the treatment, though, you should try to avoid direct sun exposure entirely. That said, most patients can return to work and get back to their normal routines within a day or two of their treatment session.
